What a 2nd Engineer does
The Second Engineer is the operational head of the engine room, responsible for the day-to-day running and maintenance of the main and auxiliary machinery. The role covers planned maintenance, supervising the engine crew, and standing in for the Chief Engineer.
Certificates and requirements
- A valid MEO Class 1 or Class 2 Certificate of Competency
- Full STCW plus operational and management engine courses
- A valid medical certificate and watchkeeping-engineer sea time
- Advanced tanker / gas endorsements for those fleets
