What a Chief Engineer does
The Chief Engineer leads the engine department and carries full responsibility for the main propulsion, generators, and all technical systems of the ship. The role covers planned maintenance, fuel and spares management, budgets, class and survey compliance, and leadership of the engine team.
Certificates and requirements
- A valid MEO Class 1 (First Class Engineer) Certificate of Competency
- Full STCW plus management-level engine courses (ERS, high voltage where applicable)
- A valid medical certificate and senior-engineer sea time
- Advanced tanker / gas courses for specialised fleets
