What a 3rd Officer does
The Third Officer (3/O) is usually the most junior deck officer, commonly keeping the 8-to-12 watch. Alongside bridge watchkeeping, the 3rd Officer is typically responsible for maintaining the fire-fighting and life-saving appliances under the Chief Officer, and assists with navigation and port paperwork.
Certificates and requirements
- A valid Second Mate (Foreign Going) Certificate of Competency
- STCW: Basic Safety Training, ARPA, ECDIS, GMDSS, Advanced Fire Fighting
- A valid medical certificate and completed cadet sea time and training record
- Tanker familiarisation for tanker assignments
