What hospitality staff do at sea
On a cruise ship the hotel department is the largest team on board, and it is what turns a working vessel into a five-star guest experience. Roles span guest services and reception, food and beverage (waiters, bar staff, sommeliers), galley and kitchen support, housekeeping and cabin stewards, and entertainment and retail. It's demanding, guest-facing work on rotating shifts, but it's also one of the most accessible ways into a seafaring career for people with a hospitality background ashore.
Training and requirements
Hospitality crew are still seafarers, so alongside their service skills they need the core sea-going certificates:
- STCW Basic Safety Training - Personal Survival, Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety & Social Responsibility
- Crowd Management training (required for passenger-ship crew)
- A valid seafarer medical fitness certificate
- Hotel, restaurant, hospitality or customer-service experience and good spoken English
