STCW modular courses are short mandatory courses every seafarer needs before sailing. Typically 11 days.
Basic Safety Training is the first course any seafarer must complete before joining a ship. It combines four elements — personal survival techniques, fire prevention and fire fighting, elementary first aid, and personal safety and social responsibilities — into one course covering sea survival, lifeboat and liferaft drills, shipboard fire fighting, basic casualty care and life aboard a working vessel.
Mandatory for every seafarer regardless of rank or department. Must be refreshed every five years.
No prior sea experience. Required before a first shipboard assignment.

Approvals and durations as published by DG Shipping, and the duration can differ between institutes. Fees and batch dates are set by the institute.
