Pre-sea courses are the entry route to a career at sea, taken before a first ship. Typically 1 year.
The Diploma in Nautical Science is the one-year pre-sea course for those training to become deck officers. It covers navigation, seamanship, ship construction, cargo work, meteorology and the safety courses, and is followed by eighteen months of sea time as a cadet before the Second Mate examination.

Indian national, 10+2 with at least 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Maths, and at least 50% in English in 10th or 12th. IMU CET is compulsory. Age not more than 25 at the start of the course. A DG Shipping approved medical certificate is required, with 6/6 vision in both eyes and no colour blindness.
