What a 3rd Engineer does
The Third Engineer is a watchkeeping engine officer, commonly responsible for the fuel and lube-oil systems, purifiers, boilers, and often the generators. The role combines engine-room watches with planned maintenance under the Second Engineer.
Certificates and requirements
- A valid MEO Class 2 or Class 4 Certificate of Competency
- STCW: Basic Safety Training, Advanced Fire Fighting, engine watch rating courses
- A valid medical certificate and the required sea time
- Tanker familiarisation for tanker assignments
