What a Chief Officer does
The Chief Officer (Chief Mate) is the head of the deck department and second in command. The role covers cargo planning and operations, ship stability and ballast, deck maintenance, and the safety and supervision of the deck crew. On tankers the Chief Officer directly runs cargo and ballast handling.
Certificates and requirements
- A valid Chief Mate (Foreign Going) Certificate of Competency
- Full STCW plus ECDIS, ARPA, GMDSS and advanced fire fighting
- Advanced tanker cargo courses for oil, chemical, or gas carriers
- A valid medical certificate and sea time as a watchkeeping officer
