What a Master (Captain) does
The Master has ultimate command and responsibility on board. This covers safe navigation, compliance with international regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, ISPS, MLC), cargo and port operations, crew management, and representing the owner and charterer. Every major decision on the ship ultimately rests with the Master.
Certificates and requirements
- A valid Master (Foreign Going) Certificate of Competency
- Full STCW suite plus management-level bridge courses (ECDIS, ARPA, BRM, GMDSS)
- A valid medical fitness certificate and substantial command / senior-officer sea time
- Advanced tanker courses if commanding oil, chemical, or gas carriers
