Technical Superintendent Jobs (Shore / Maritime)

A full guide to the Technical Superintendent role ashore - what it involves day to day, the sea career that leads into it, and what shore employers look for.

What the role involves

The Technical Superintendent manages the technical operations, maintenance and budgets of an assigned group of vessels from shore. Day to day that means overseeing the planned maintenance system, approving repairs and spare-part purchases, coordinating dry-dockings, and managing class and flag-state surveys. A Technical Super is the office's technical point of contact for typically three to six ships, and travels to attend dockings, major repairs, and vessel visits.

The career path from sea

This is the classic ashore move for a Chief Engineer. The experience of running an engine room, controlling a budget, and dealing with class, makers and shipyards maps almost directly onto the role. Strong Second Engineers with proven management ability sometimes move across too.

What shore employers look for

Ship managers and owners look for an MEO Class 1 Certificate of Competency, solid sailing experience on the relevant vessel and engine types, and strong budgeting, planning and vendor-management skills. Comfort with a PMS and clear written English for reporting are essential.
